Operator Matteo Freddi on the situation

Low yields and high prices for Italian white onions

In many areas of Emilia Romagna, and northern Italy in general, onion yields are quite low. This is causing concern among buyers, who are trying to woo wholesalers and growers.

"Prices are very high because the harvest seems to be disappointing not only in Italy, but also in other parts of Europe," said Matteo Freddi. "In addition, growers are keeping prices high because they are trying to recover ever-increasing growing costs. If back in 2021 it was €0.25 cents per kg in the countryside for golden onions, today it is at least twice that."

One particular variety of onion, the Borettana, suffered big losses due to the high temperatures in July. "The saleable quantities keep decreasing, as several lots have reacted very badly to the high temperatures."

Another problem is arising for the white onions, regarding the size. "The large sizes are fetching good prices, but a lot of the white onions are just small," he said.

"Sales were very smooth the week of 15 August. After that it was a little less and now retail and wholesale are not pulling hard. But the prices are fortunately holding up."
