The harvesting of Gala apples in Alto Adige started on August 10th, 2023. The initial prices were very good, though they subsequently dropped. Markus Tscholl, coordinator of Asta Frutta Alto Adige, explained that "quotations exceed those of 2022, though I was expecting something better. We are halfway through harvesting, so we will see how the next auctions will go."

Tscholl says that, over the past few days, the auction price of Gala apples grade 75+ Select in crates was of around 65 eurocents/kg, which dropped to 50 eurocents/kg for grade 70+ Select in bins. Second-choice apples achieved lower quotations.
"The average quality is good and I'm surprised that fruits have not been affected by the high temperatures. The color is looking good too. The first harvesting operations at the bottom of the valley are ending, and the second ones will begin soon. Then those in the medium-valley will begin on August 28th and those in the upper valley will start in early September."
With a number of clients that almost equals that of producers (550 registered buyers and 760 producers), Asta Frutta Alto Adige represents a historic apple trader, since it first started doing business in 1960. The producers cover 900 hectares in total, producing around 45 thousand tons.
"We hold the GlobalGAP and Grasp certifications so that we can export all over the world, and we already sell the whole production during harvesting. Usually no more than 24 hours pass between the auction and the sale. The auctions end with the last varieties around late October. The best batches are identified by the Select mark, which guarantees the best ripening and coloring levels and the maximum uniformity with 75+ grades for all varieties (70+ for Gala)."
