Charl du Bois - Capespan

"Trade in Asia has been maturing, especially with regards to sales channels and packaging"

At Capespan the focus is to deliver high-quality produce and build strong relationships with their customers in Asia. Asia has always been a big focus for the company, but never more so than in the past decade.

"We still view it as developing market with unlimited potential for growth and strategic alignment with our global sales plan. The trade in Asia has been maturing, especially with regards to sales channels and packaging, which Capespan has embraced," said Charl du Bois, Commercial Executive.

Capespan has strong brands, developed through many years of investments and continue to promote their brands pro-actively and aggressively. Cape is the premium quality fruit brand that is used for grapes, apples and pears. The Outspan Brand is known for excellent quality citrus, sourced from the world’s best growers. Capespan considers in store promotions as one of the most effective vehicle of brand building and has recently had a big focus on their Outspan Gems brand of premium mandarins. Outspan Gems is a brand that has seen exponential growth that has to be managed sustainably with only the best quality fruit and only to selected customers. Goldland is another premium citrus brand strengthening their Global Footprint in the Middle East.

“Through careful selection of the best varieties and by leveraging our expertise in packaging and cold chain management we ensure the delivery of fresh, delicious fruit to our customers in Asia. Although the big growth has been in China, we are as excited about countries such as Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, etc. The younger, growing middle class focus on a healthier lifestyle and spending more disposable income on good quality fresh produce," said Nico Kotze, Head of Citrus.

Focussing on the needs of retailers, wholesalers and foodservice companies across the Globe, Capespan markets fresh fruit to more than 60 countries throughout the year. The company also provides supply services solutions to international fruit trading partners.

"Using sustainable global procurement strategies tailored to customer needs, we source top cultivars from producers as well as our own farms to ensure year-round supply security. Capespan owns farms throughout Southern Africa for maximum product supply risk mitigation, Capespan Farms continue to grow market share with leading retail customers world-wide. Not only do we provide our producers with global market access, they also enjoy the benefits of Capespan’s Cultivar development programmes, cutting-edge technical support and stringent quality inspections. Capespan will continue working with breeders and growers on new varieties which will improve the quality profile of their offering," said Charl du Bois.
