"We're expecting an excellent persimmon campaign"

Despite the adverse weather events that have characterized the spring and summer seasons, expectations are positive for persimmon from southern Italy. The unfavorable weather does not seem to have caused particular problems as happened for many other crops.

"Considering the current status of our crops, both the ones we own and those owned by our partners, we are expecting quantities and quality to be good. Yields should be 20-30% higher than last season. The average grades have already reached a diameter of 70 mm. There are plots laden with fruits with good grades," reports Gallicchio Frutta, a company led by Francesca Gallicchio that grows, packages and commercializes Rojo Brillante persimmons in Italy and Europe, holder of the GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications.

The company also reports that harvesting operations should start around October 10th-15th, slightly later than last year. "It will be a good season for both producers, who will have larger quantities to sell, and companies, not just because they will be able to provide more guarantees, but also because bills have somewhat gone down over the past few months. Planning is coming to an end with some national and international chains. So the situation is looking definitely more promising than a year ago."

On top of expanding its crops (from the 45/50 hectares of 2022 to the current 80 hectares), this season the company will also launch the new 'Divino - the Italian persimmon' brand to make the produce recognizable on the market. "We have been trying to extend the calendar to March for the past two years, but the limited yields, together with the growing customer demand, always lead to quick destocking, forcing us to end the season sooner than expected. This is nonetheless encouraging, because it means people appreciate our produce. Now we're just hoping for the weather to do its part without final surprises."
