Rubén Ortiz, commercial director of Técnicas Sanjorge: "We advise our clients based on the berry variety they are going to produce"

"The experience acquired in our own land allowed us to become specialists in greenhouses for berries"

Based in the province of Huelva, Spain's main strawberry production area, the company Técnicas Sanjorge has been devoted to the supply of agricultural material since the mid-1980s, managing to grow along with a sector that has positioned itself as a leader in the production of berries in Europe. The firm has become a specialist in the manufacture of greenhouses and custom-made macro tunnels for the cultivation of berries.

"Huelva is the place where most greenhouse technology for berry cultivation has been developed in recent decades. We have perfected our technique in greenhouses devoted to berry cultivation, and thanks to our R&D, the technology here can be brought to any part of the world," said Rubén Ortiz, commercial director of the group.

"To be precise, we have developed low-cost, oval reinforced macro-tunnel greenhouses designed for the cultivation of berries which can be assembled by the customers themselves, thereby saving on installation costs, and which make it possible to increase the density of plants per hectare."

"We managed to extend the greenhouses' width to up to 10 meters, which is something our competitors couldn't do, and make them more resistant to any climatic adversity, from strong winds to snow accumulation. In fact, it was only after seeing for ourselves the various difficulties faced by berry growers in their greenhouses, from South Africa to Poland, that we were able to develop this structure and make sure it helped address those problems."

With the cultivation advice and this high resistance and low-cost design, Técnicas Sanjorge is allowing more and more producers in the world to acquire greenhouses with which to protect their crops from the changing weather conditions and produce fruit of the quality demanded in the export markets, ensuring a faster return on investment. "That is why this kind of greenhouse for berries is suited for all the producing areas of sub-Saharan Africa, Morocco, or Eastern Europe, where berry cultivation still has great potential."

"But at Técnicas Sanjorge, we are not only manufacturing the structures," said Rubén. "We go a step further and provide advice to our customers regarding the design of the plantations and the characteristics of the greenhouses they need, based on the strawberry, blueberry, or raspberry varieties they are going to produce, helping them make the best decisions taking into account the leafiness of the plants, the irrigation needs of each variety, the area of the plant where the fruits accumulate, etc. This is only possible thanks to all the experience we have acquired in our own land, which is what has allowed us to become true specialists."

Turnkey installations
"We launched the greenhouse line in 2000 with a small macro-tunnel factory, and today it accounts for more than 50% of the company's turnover, which, in addition to this line of business, is also involved in the supply and irrigation business, as well as a new line of renewables which we are starting up at the moment. Moreover, we will soon start with the first phase of the construction of our new facilities for the greenhouse business, which will allow us to increase our current 8,000 m² to 20,000 m²."
