It is important to emphasize that while the mango supply has been sharply reduced this year, the quality of Spanish mangoes "is exceptional," says Juan Miguel, of Tropicsur. "Probably even better than in previous years, although Spanish mangoes are always of superior quality, which is why they are so highly appreciated. The water shortage has resulted in the mangoes arriving much earlier than in other years, at least two weeks earlier in many areas, and the Brix degrees are much higher than at this time of any other year."
"However, we are facing the most complex season in mango history, both because of the low production (about 80% lower than last year), and the speed of harvesting. With luck, we will reach week 39 with our mangoes," said Juan Miguel.
"Our sales are currently focused on Europe, especially France, where we have grown a lot over the last three years in terms of sales to large wholesalers. We also have a strategic partner in Switzerland that distributes our fruit throughout the Alpine country, as well as another partner in the northern part of Europe. "This year's prices for the boxes containing sizes 6 to 12 amount to around 9-10 Euro, with prices at origin of around 1.50-1.60 Euro per kilo."
"Despite the volumes being under great pressure this season, we are also opening up to a completely new market: the Arab countries. Perhaps because of the greater distance from them, these markets tend to be considered a bit more 'secondary' by companies, but they are very interesting, as they highly appreciate quality. They want superpremium fruit and are willing to pay the right price."
"At Tropicsur, we are happy to report that more and more people are contacting us every day from these emerging markets and sales are growing every year. We are ready to pay them the attention they deserve."
"We have started our expansion in the retail market"
TropicSur, based in the Malaga town of Alhaurín el Grande and managed by the González Brothers, is in the middle of a commercial expansion process, following the separation in June this year of the Catalan company Cultivar, with which it currently maintains a friendly business relationship.
"We are not growing only in terms of new destinations. So far, we had been working generally with wholesale markets, but we have started our expansion in the retail," says Álvaro González. "In the last six weeks, we have started working with several national supermarket chains. We want to be careful with every step we take to ensure solid progress, but our prospects are very good."
Tropicsur will be present at Fruit Attraction, in Hall 9, stand 9F12A.
