Auchan Portugal gives new life to its unsold fruits and vegetables

Auchan Portugal has launched the Happy Boxes, boxes containing 5kg of fruit and vegetables that have lost their commercial characteristics but are still in good condition for consumption. The Happy Boxes are offered to customers at a fixed price of € 2.49 per box.

"The content of each box is always a surprise for the customer because it depends on what hasn't been sold in the store. For example, customers can find pears, apples, mangoes, kiwis, peaches, nectarines, bananas, or citrus fruits in their Happy Boxes. But they can also find vegetables, such as turnips, peppers, beets, carrots, zucchini, mushrooms, or cucumbers."

"The goal of this initiative is to combat food waste by giving new life to surplus fruits and vegetables that have lost their commercial characteristics; and at a very competitive retail value, increasing access to this type of food that is essential for a healthy diet," stated Tânia Covas, the head of the anti-waste project at Auchan Retail Portugal.
