According to an analysis prepared by Hortoinfo based on data from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency), over the last decade, Spanish tomato exports in the first half of the year decreased by 41.44%, going from 626.67 million kilos from January to June 2014 to 366.96 million kilos in the same period of 2023.
In the first half of 2023, Spain exported its tomatoes at an average price of €2.04/kg. The United Kingdom paid an average price of €2.35/kg for Spain's tomatoes, the best price among the five largest buyers.
Almost 3 out of every 10 tomatoes that Spain exported in 2022 were destined for the German market. In the first half of this year, Germany bought 103.4 million kilos of tomatoes from Spain, i.e., 22% less than in the same months of 2014, for a value of 224.92 million euro and an average price of €2.18/kg.
The Netherlands, which in the last ten years reduced its purchases of Spanish tomatoes in the first half of the year by 37.33%, was the second biggest destination for this Spanish product. In the first six months of this year, the Netherlands purchased 45.42 million kilos of Spanish tomatoes for 85.71 million euro at an average price of €1.89/kg.
It was followed by France with 44.86 million kilos (48.39% lower than in the same period of 2014) worth 74.44 million euro and an average price of €1.66/kg.
The United Kingdom ranked fourth with 39.14 million kilos (-52.69%) worth 92.05 million euro and an average price of 2.35€/kg.
Poland was the fifth largest destination, with 22.83 million kilos (-45.11%) worth 42.49 million euro and an average price of €1.86/kg.
