Morocco sends over half of its tomato exports to France

According to EastFruit, tomatoes continue to be Morocco's main fruit and vegetable export product, accounting for about a third of all of the country's fruit and vegetable exports in the 2022/23 campaign.

In the 2022/23 campaign (June to July), the country exported 716,700 tons of tomatoes worth 990 million dollars, focusing its shipments on the EU. In fact, in the first quarter of this year, one-third of all tomatoes sold in the EU came from Morocco. It was the first time in history that Morocco sold more tomatoes to the EU than Spain in the first three months of the year.

France, the world's third-biggest importer of tomatoes (after the United States and Germany), is the main buyer of Moroccan vegetables. Morocco ships more than half of all of its tomato exports (51%) to France.

It also exports large quantities of tomatoes to the UK (19%) and the Netherlands (11%)."The growth of shipments to these two countries played a key role in the overall growth of Morocco's tomato exports," Eastfruit stated.

On the other hand, shipments to some countries show the most active growth. For example, Moroccan producers managed to export their first shipments of tomatoes to Belgium just five years ago, and Moroccan tomatoes appeared in the markets of Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Austria just last season. However, in one year, shipping volumes to Denmark and Austria doubled, and exports to the Czech Republic tripled.

There was an outstanding decrease in tomato shipments from Morocco to Russia. Shipments to this destination have decreased over the years and have been virtually absent since 2021.
