Storable variety grows in the Alte Land:

Aldi Süd launches exclusive "ALDIamo" apple variety

From mid-October, ALDI SÜD will be selling its first own apple variety under the name "ALDIamo". Customers were able to vote for this in the spring of this year. The apple will be available exclusively, in all 2,000 ALDI SÜD shops.

Bright red, crunchy, juicy and a fresh, sweet tasting: these are the characteristics of the new ALDI SÜD apple variety of German origin. The exclusive "ALDIamo" apple grows in the Alte Land region just outside Hamburg, the largest contiguous fruit-growing area in northern Europe.

Thanks to its good storability, the new variety can be offered at ALDI SÜD almost all year round. The apple is sold loose. "We are very pleased that the ALDI SÜD apple will soon finally be sold in all our shops. "ALDIamo" is a project that could only come about through close cooperation with our long-standing partner:ing in the Old Country," emphasises Erik Döbele, Managing Director Buying & Customer Interaction at ALDI SÜD.ALDI SÜD shows the genesis of the new variety in a video:

Close partnership during the project
The new variety was developed in cooperation between the Züchtungsinitiative Niederelbe (ZIN) and the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences. In autumn 2019, ALDI SÜD joined the project as a strategic partner. Building on close cooperation with suppliers in the Alte Land, the exclusive project between ALDI SÜD and ZIN was able to grow as a partnership.

"Developing a new variety takes a very long time. It took 20 years before we were ready to plan distribution," explains farmer Ulrich Buchterkirch and adds: "That's why we are of course particularly proud now that we can finally harvest the fruits of our labour and then also see them in the ALDI SÜD shops.
