The Moroccan avocado campaign has begun, with small volumes sold in local supermarkets and some exports of green skin varieties. "An effective start to the export campaign is expected in mid-November with the Hass variety, which accounted for over 95% of exports last year," says Moumen El Achkar, CEO of ECOMAC.
El Achkar told FreshPlaza, "The new season is very promising. Volumes have increased considerably, thanks to improved yields and a general increase in acreage at the national level. Weather conditions have been very favorable, even better than last season. Heat waves spared the Loukkous region, Morocco's avocado stronghold. We've had a few complications from humidity in April and low vegetation in May, but the damage is limited."
Confirming the forecasts made by the avocado growers' Association (MAVA) a few months ago, El Achkar announces, "Volumes increased by at least 40%, taking production at the national level to over 60,000 tonnes, a national record."
"Quality is fantastic this season," continues El Achkar. "We have good sizes, with a high percentage of 12-20. Sizes are therefore better than those in Spain, Israel, or Colombia. The competition looks set to favor Moroccan growers this season. We also have portions of 22-24 sizes, but Colombia will likely be more competitive in this segment."
The Moroccan avocado industry is undergoing fast-paced development, with a constant increase in acreage and rewarding prices compared to the competition. Over the past six years, export volumes have quadrupled, making Morocco the world's 9th largest exporter last season, with 40,000 tonnes exported.
