US sweet potato imports dependent on Egyptian supply

The harvest of North Carolina’s sweet potatoes has begun, growing conditions have been good with the right amount of rain at the right time.

Daniel Badger from UK importer VitaFresh Produce has just returned from the US after visiting growers in North Carolina: “Our imports of sweet potatoes from North Carolina supplement our year-round supply. The quality is looking good, but growers are saying that 20-30% less has been planted after a poor season last year where quality was less than expected, this was reflected in the returns.”

The sweet potatoes need to cure for around a month before being ready for both the domestic market and exports, with Thanks Giving in November and less volumes Daniel doesn’t expect any arrivals before early December.

“At the moment there are plenty of sweet potatoes from Egypt on the European market, we will wait until Egypt is out of the market before we ship, the volumes will also be dependent on this.”

Vita Fresh Produce supplement the US supply with volumes from Honduras during the winter.
