"Italy imports 80% of its walnut consumption"

"The European Union is a net importer of walnuts and Italy purchases abroad 80% of what it consumes internally. During the twenty-year period between 2000 and 2021, consumption increased by 289%."

Italy is responsible for 11% of the European walnut production, but consumes 31% of it (leading consumers). The general price is almost always determined by the availability of produce from the US and Chile."

China is the leading producer and consumer, the US are the second producer and the leading exporter, followed by Chile for what concerns production. Within the EU, Italy is the leading consumer and the fourth producer.

"The 2022 campaign has seen a considerable growth in China, the US and Chile: a 5% increase is expected for the 2023 campaign (Walnut Objective Report-USDA) as well as a better quality, while a 9% drop in production is expected in Chile due to the low water availability and irregular temperatures in central areas.

In Europe, the 2022 campaign registered a 13% increase in production (France +34%, Italy +49%), while a 9% drop is expected for 2023. The good expectations in China and the US are met with the lower harvests in Chile and the EU, leading to an overall global offer in line with 2022.

As for climate change, agronomist Federico López Larrinaga discussed perspectives and the possible techniques to be implemented to tackle climate change. The new issue of New Factor's "Rivista della filiera italiana della noce" was also presented - a useful tool to get to know all aspects of the world of walnuts.

Noci di Romagna are produced as part of the In Noce project, which sees the collaboration of 23 businesses covering 500 hectares in total. The leader of the project is New Factor, a historical company from Rimini constantly looking for the best raw materials, which are processed using innovative techniques from the field to the shelves.
