Italian radicchio exports not helped by rising temperatures

"We have become one of Europe's leading companies in producing and marketing radicchio and carrots. For more than 40 years, the company has been exporting 100 percent of its production to all of Europe to supply supermarkets and agribusinesses," said Alberto Mazzagallo, senior sales manager of the Veneto-based company, during a phone interview.

"Our main products are radicchio and carrots," explains Mazzagallo, "but we also export lettuces (sugar loaf, frisee and escarole) and baby leaves (rocket and spinach), as well as other products such as butternut, onions, Savoy cabbage, white cabbage, courgettes and red cabbage. We are able to serve our customers all year round thanks to our three production areas in northern, central and southern Italy and our two processing warehouses, one in Chioggia in the province of Venice and the other in Ispica in the province of Ragusa.”

"We have just started the winter campaign for the conventional, organic and PGI chicory of Chioggia, which is part of the Consorzio di Protezione Geografica (Consortium for Protected Geographical Indication). "We are at the beginning of our activity and, frankly, these high temperatures out of season are not very helpful in terms of sales. Since we deal exclusively with foreign countries, we still have to compete with other European producers. In any case, the product appears to be of excellent standard and features a good shelf life."

“We will start the winter campaign of the local product from the Chioggia area with carrots around the second half of October 2023", clarifies the expert, "while for the industrial product, because we are dealing with later varieties, we will start around mid-November. For years now, we have been selecting a perfect product, free of waste and of excellent quality, which will allow us to supply the most important Italian industries. We are also starting to market cherry tomatoes from our Ispica branch. This is a high-quality product, produced in the Pachino area. We are also a member of the Consorzio di Tutela del Pomodoro di Pachino IGP.”

Warehouse expansion is under way

"Finally, a note on the Madrid show," concludes Mazzagallo, "which was very interesting and rewarding for us, especially considering the fact that we are in the process of finalizing the Chioggia plant expansion. We will soon triple our cold storage capacity thanks to this investment. Encouraged by this new achievement, we have established new relationships and supply contracts with major European industries. We are already preparing for Fruit Logistica in Berlin in 2024. We will have our own stand there."
