The French Apple Pear Association (ANPP) gives a positive review of its visit to Fruit Attraction and talks about the very promising start of the French apple campaign. Sandrine Gaborieau, in charge of communication for the association, also discusses the surprising color of this year’s Golden apples.
Very positive indicators this year
Once again, the Madrid-based event won the hearts of national and international professionals of the sector. Sandrine Gaborieau confirms this, as do all the exhibitors and visitors present this year. “Fruit Attraction is becoming increasingly dynamic. We saw a lot of people, producers and clients from the French distribution, including contacts from the export sector.” This year, operators are delighted with the start of the French apple campaign, which looks very promising. There are no old crop stocks, no stocks from the southern hemisphere, and price levels are much better than last year, which is an essential marker “to ensure farm profitability.” Last year's drought had left the sector “very gloomy” but this year, professionals are much more “optimistic!”

2023 Golden apples: ripe but less colorful
The association has warned that this year’s Golden apples will be less colorful. In order to avoid any rejection, the association has decided to communicate with wholesalers and supermarkets. “Most of the production basins in France experienced unusual weather conditions during the summer of 2023. Although the orchards were generally spared from the drought, the heatwave in the days leading up to the harvest affected the color of the fruit. As a result, the color intensity of summer varieties such as the Gala and Golden was more difficult to achieve due to the lack of cool nights, although ripeness thresholds (measured by sugar content and size) were reached. This year, the Golden apples will be a little greener than usual, but ripe to perfection.”
