Based on the same scoring system as the Nutri-Score, which rates a product's nutritional quality, the Planet-Score provides information on environmental criteria. Launched by ITAB (Technical Institute of Organic Agriculture), the Planet Score is not widely used yet in the fruit and vegetable sector, but it has already been adopted by several chains, including Biocoop, Naturalia and La Vie Claire.
The Planet-Score displays an environmental score on a scale of five colors, from green to red, and five letters, from A to E (A and green being the best score) for the impact on climate, biodiversity and the use of pesticides.
“More clarity for consumers”
For nearly 8 years, Jardins du Midi has been working to make its products “more environmentally friendly, by becoming a member of the Collectif Nouveaux Champs", for example. Choosing the Planet-Score therefore seemed like a logical next step. “The direction we have taken in recent years has enabled us to qualify for Planet-Score label scoring,” explains Philippe Quaranta, managing director of Jardins du Midi. For consumers, this means more “clarity. It is an emerging label, but we think that it can respond to consumer concerns and be understood easily.” In a press release from 2022, ITAB stated that “in a survey on 1,000 consumers representative of the French population, the Planet-Score was overwhelmingly preferred by 48%, compared with 18% for the second and 8% for the last of the 5 formats presented.”
