Christopher Römer from Josef Stapf Großmarkt Ltd in the Fresh Food Center Frankfurt

"Despite their short marketing window, Australian blood oranges have established themselves well"

Blood oranges are traditionally sourced primarily from Sicily, and they are traded solely during the winter months. For the second year in a row, Josef Stapf Großmarkt Ltd, based in the Frischezentrum Frankfurt, is now offering Australian blood oranges of the Tarocco Ippolito variety. "It is a very exclusive product that is currently being offered almost nowhere. It is available just for a short time, i.e. from mid-September to the end of October. The article is particularly popular with those who specifically ask about imported mangoes, for example owner-managed retail markets, top restaurateurs and specialist retailers," explains Christopher Römer, buyer and seller at the wholesale company.

Depending on the caliber, blood oranges from Oceania sell for between 3.90 and 4.80 euros per kg. “However, we offer the entire range of calibers because there are simply no specific desired calibers for this item,” says Römer. Although the variety belongs to the same genus of 'marketable' Tarocco from southern Italy, some visual differences can be observed. "The Italian fruit is quite thin-skinned, while the Australian blood orange is much thicker-skinned and red on the outside."

Persuasion bears fruit
After the first year of sales in 2022, volumes could be increased this year, the fruit retailer continues. "The product was of course brand new last year and no one could really imagine that we could sell the fruit at these prices. The Australian blood oranges are at a similar price level to the first Sicilian product that was on the market during the St. Nicholas season."

"We explained to customers that we could now offer blood oranges at the same price in the autumn. This year, it's much easier to convince prospective buyers. In this respect, the item has already established itself well."
