It’s boom time at various ports of southern Ireland, due to Brexit

Nolan Transport based, in Rosslare, Co. Wexford, is one of Wexford’s leading employers; more than 1,000 staff are working there, and it is operating over 2,000 trailers and 700 trucks. It has been able to grow massively due to Brexit.

In 2015, the year before Brexit, there were six sailings a week to the continent from the Co. Wexford port, now there are 36. Business is up 400% in seven years. The reason for this is that most companies here no longer use the UK as ‘land-bridge’, but sail directly out of Ireland. This way they avoid heavy-duty customs regulations introduced at ports like Dover when the UK exited the EU. So, it’s boom time at the various Southern ports, but particularly at Rosslare.

The growth has been so phenomenal the authorities there have begun a £300m investment programme to develop further passenger and freight facilities. Massive investment is also expected to be announced soon on the road and other infrastructure in the area.
