Dion van Vliet, Yex:

"Despite inflation, sales of 'smaller' exotics continue well"

In the wake of larger exotics like mangos, limes, asparagus, and papayas, the Dutch company Yex also gets smaller products like rambutan, carambola, horned melon, and granadilla every year. "Many of these products are generally flown in from Colombia, but we get things like rambutan and mangosteen from countries like Vietnam and Indonesia, too," Dion van Vliet says.

"Their volumes are somewhat lower, so transport by boat is still difficult, or their quality doesn't allow it. With many products, we check whether we can find an alternative to air freight, including package testing."

"As December approaches, which always massively boosts exotic fruit sales, we've noticed increased demand in recent weeks," says the importer. "Despite inflation, there's no decrease in sales, so we're expecting smaller exotic sales to be as good in December."

"At Christmas, there's good demand for all exotics, but carambola, baby pineapple, and granadilla are particularly popular," Dion concludes.
