Sipo has been commercializing the produce for the past two years

Italian sweet potatoes - a niche produce that is getting more popular

Sweet potatoes are registering demand on the up, fair prices along the entire chain and increasingly curious consumers. Sipo believes in them and supplies multiple varieties with different colors.

"After a first test year, sweet potatoes have been part of our assortment for the past two years. Demand is growing and it would be even more if people knew more about how to use the product. We are pleased anyway because we collect produce every day and deliver it do the big retail chain every day," reports Massimiliano Ceccarini from Sipo.

Sipo decided to place its bets on sweet potatoes of Italian origin. "Our sweet potatoes are grown in the Treviso area. Harvesting starts in late September and continues until February. We opted for Italian produce precisely because we want to provide a valid alternative to consumers: too often shelves are filled with foreign sweet potatoes, usually from Egypt, while we have domestic produce from a controlled and guaranteed chain."

Two types of packaging are available: smaller grades are placed in 650 gram trays, while the larger ones are placed loose in crates. The produce arrives from the fields and is brushed, but not washed.

"Around this period, loose potatoes are sold at around €1.50-1.70/kg. Prices are rather stable with no fluctuations. Sweet potatoes can be used just as traditional ones, although the taste is different. Younger people eat them as a sort of snack, with mayonnaise and ketchup."
