Apple prices up in Hungary due to weaker harvest

Many Hungarian apple growers are complaining that they did not reach the average harvest this year because of the cooler and wetter than average spring months. Apples are grown on 45,000 hectares in the country, including 250 hectares in Tolna County. Forecasts predict a moderate apple harvest of 450,000 to 550,000 tons this year.

Farmers in Tolna County see the situation differently. Where farms are well equipped, and the orchards are not too old, they expect a better harvest. However, in places where this is not the case, farmers anticipate a weaker season. Consequently, the purchase price of apples will be high, reaching as high as HUF 600-750 in winter.
