In the absence of consensus, the Ministry will set the price of Ecuadorian bananas for 2024

The second meeting of the Banana Advisory Council ended on Tuesday without reaching a consensus on what price to set for a box of bananas for next year, so the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) will be in charge of setting the price. "No compromise was reached at the meeting," stated Richard Salazar, executive director of the Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec). According to the Banana Law, the State Ministry has seven days to announce the new value that will be used in the export contracts starting January 1, 2024, he added.

The exporters arrived at this second meeting with the same position they had in the previous one, that is, the price of a box of bananas should remain at $6.50, the current price of 2023. The producers relented in their claims in relation to their initial proposal to raise the price of the box of fruit to $8.01 and arrived on Tuesday 24 with a position to place the price at up to $7.50. The Regional Corporation of Ecuadorian Banana Growers (Agroban) proposed a price of $7.25, which was closer to the producing sector's request.
