Javier Moreno, manager of Mister Pistacho: "The price gap between conventional and organic kernel is increasingly smaller"

“The demand for pistachio kernel remains strong, especially in Italy”

The demand for Spanish pistachio continues to rise, and this is reflected in the prices, which rose by 40% for the Larnaka, the most sought-after variety, reaching 16 Euro per kilo, as revealed by the latest data from the Mesa de Precios de Talavera, updated on October 4. The price continues to rise, though, and "at the moment, a kilo already costs 18 Euro," said Javier Moreno, manager of Mister Pistachio.

"The demand for pistachio kernel remains strong, especially in Italy, where it is used extensively by the ice cream industry. The kernel's advantage is that it stays in very good condition inside the shell and is used when needed, and everything points to Italy possibly having issues with the supply," he says. "The production there, located in Bronte, Sicily, is very small, and in addition to a growth of the demand in the country, there is also the fact that the harvest alternates."

"The Larnaka variety is the most appreciated in the Italian market because, compared to other varieties, it delivers more color and flavor, and besides the ice cream sector, it is also increasingly used in the processing industry. In fact, we could even say that while the demand for pistachios for consumption as a snack continues to grow, in general, the demand for kernels from the industry is growing at a faster rate."

The figures from the Mesa de Precios de Talavera confirmed that, at the beginning of the month, the price of pistachio kernel of the Larnaka variety was almost 44% higher than that of other varieties, such as the Kerman, Sirora, Lost Hill or Golden Hill. And the price gap between conventional and organic kernel is increasingly smaller.

"The reason for this increasingly smaller price gap between the conventional and organic production is the fact that the demand for organic pistachio has fallen in Europe. In the current context of inflation, consumers are no longer as willing to pay the higher price, although, in turn, they are paying more and more for the conventional," says Javier. "We must recall that there used to be a price gap of several Euro, and now it is just of 40-50 cents."
