Domestic offers continued to form the basis of the potato assortment. European imports only played a minor role in some cases. Availability was sufficient to meet demand. Except for isolated reductions, prices remained mostly stable, according to the BLE.
Lower Saxony:
"It is a rather good harvest," says the RWG Niedersachsen Mitte eG . They expect a full warehouse this year, i.e. a delivery of 21,000 tonnes of potatoes, which is significantly more than last year. In the drought summer of 2022, there were around 18,000 tonnes. At that time, the potatoes lacked water. Due to the abundant availability of water during the growing season, the young potatoes grew quickly. This could lead to hollow hearts. In other words: hollow spaces in the potato. Another danger is brown rot as well as late blight if there are periods of heavy rainfall.
Due to the weather, the end of the harvest is delayed in Lower Saxony. Farmers demanded a storage surcharge for first sweaty batches, according to BVNON.
Rhineland-Palatinate:
The main harvest is now largely completed, the supply little pressing and sufficient for the demand. The decline in producer prices has stopped. Goods with defects are being traded at significant discounts. The stored lots must first sweat through before they are available to the market again. It is not yet possible to foresee storage mark-ups.
The difficult weather this year led to up to fifty percent fewer potatoes being harvested in parts of the Western Palatinate. This is what farmers from Lambsborn and Niederkirchen in the Kaiserslautern district or Homberg in the Kusel district told SWR, for example. But there were also farmers who were satisfied with their harvest - for example in Contwig in the district of Südwestpfalz.
The good news: Despite this summer's capers, all farmers have indicated that they want to leave the prices for the "Pfälzer Grumbeere" as they are for the time being.
Schleswig-Holstein:
Currently the situation is still stable and supply and demand seem to be in balance. The price pressure on the potato market will probably increase somewhat in the course of the reporting week due to an abundant supply of table potatoes. Food retailers are reacting with stockpiling campaigns, which is slightly counteracting the weak prices. Surcharges for stored goods are being discussed. Storage and the sweating process may reduce the supply pressure somewhat. In general, no price increase is expected, as the supply will continue to be abundant. Due to the unstable weather, the end of harvest is postponed in some regions. There is hardly any room for free goods, as almost exclusively contract goods are traded. It is difficult to forecast the qualities of the field goods for the next few weeks.
NRW:
In the current week, there will still be few table potatoes available from storage. Packers and traders continue to supply themselves with field produce. Harvesting and storage of industrial goods is currently limited by weather conditions.
Hesse:
In the state of Hesse, potato prices remained unchanged compared to the previous week.
