Austria:

"2023 will be a lean walnut year"

More than 2,500 private individuals and farmers already deliver their nuts to the Nussland cracker in Dollbach, Lower Austria, year after year. "This year the frequency will certainly be lower," Nussland boss Julia Taubinger says regretfully about the meagre harvest in an interview with NÖN. "The cool and wet spring has caused major crop losses for the nut trees. We are all the more pleased when people who have nuts in their gardens or fields bring them to us."

Insight into the cracking process

In Nussland, the nuts are cracked with one of the most modern machines in Europe and the shells are meticulously separated from the nut. "The nut shells provide valuable heat energy for the drying plant," explains production manager Markus Schindlegger. Even though this year's yields are significantly below those of previous years, Nussland has taken precautions because of the optimal storage conditions. "We have enough nuts that are always cracked fresh in their dimension unique nut plant in Austria," Schindlegger is convinced.
