Chilean cherries arrive at Guangzhou market, new season Belgian Conference Pears arrive

A batch of air-shipped Chilean cherries arrived at Guangzhou Jiangnan Market this week, marking the first batch of Chilean cherries in the Guangzhou market in the 2023/24 production season, attracting the attention of insiders. In terms of other major categories, the arrival of Peruvian blueberries has increased significantly, the price of Chilean avocados is lower than before, the import of citrus has been slow due to the impact of the launch of domestic citrus, and the new season of Belgian Conference Pears has arrived.

Air-shipped Chilean cherries arrived at Guangzhou Jiangnan Market on Monday (10.23). According to the importer and distributor of this batch of cherries, Guangzhou FAIKEE, this batch of arrivals comes from Garces Fruit, a Chilean exporter of cherries. The variety is Brooks. All are packaged in 5KG. The specifications include JDD, 2JD and 2JDD, 3JD and 3JDD, 4JD and 4JDD, a total of 120 pieces, with 3JD being the most.

According to this importer, the first batch of cherries arrived in the Guangzhou market this year about a week earlier than last year. They are produced from orchards in northern Chile. The arrival is of good hardness and freshness. The color is dark red and the taste is sour but acceptable. The Brix can reach 20. The overall taste is better than the first batch that arrived last year. It is reported that according to different specifications, the opening price of this batch is ¥1400-¥2000/piece, which is close to the price of the first batch last year. Since the quantity was small and it was the first sale in the Guangzhou market, it was sold out on the day the containers were opened.

In terms of avocados, the market arrivals include avocados from Chile, New Zealand and China, with Chilean avocados being the majority. It is understood that the price of Chilean avocados has been generally stable in the past two weeks. In view of the overall low market price, the price is about 20% lower than the same period last year. The quality of the arrivals is currently satisfactory, but the quantity has decreased recently.

The arrival of Peruvian blueberries has increased significantly compared to before, and more varieties with sour or sweet taste have arrived. However, the high price affects the sales. Some merchants said that if the price does not exceed ¥120/piece, then buyers can accept it even if the goods are damaged. However, if the price is higher than this, it will be difficult to sell. Sweet varieties are still more popular, but the focus remains on prices. Therefore, there is a large backlog of blueberries priced at ¥140-¥150/piece on the market. In addition, most of the blueberries arriving now are medium-sized blueberries of 15mm+ to 17mm+, and currently, more buyers prefer small-sized blueberries because the price is cheaper. It is reported that there had been relatively fewer arrivals recently.

In terms of imported citrus, South African oranges are at the end of the season and have relatively fewer arrivals. Affected by the overall market situation and the impact of the launch of domestic oranges, prices have recently fallen by about 15%. At the same time, Australian orange prices are also declining, and sales of both are less. The price of South African grapefruit has increased recently due to less arrival, but merchants estimate that the price will not increase again in the future, and is likely to drop in response to market conditions.

Belgian Conference Pear

The new season of imported pears from Belgium has arrived on the market, available in 4KG small boxes and 13KG large boxes. Small boxes sell for about ¥120/piece. Dutch Conference Pears have come to the market earlier. Some merchants said that the taste and quality of Belgian pears have always been better, which may have an impact on Dutch pears.
