Israeli supermarkets have been urged by the Ministry of Agriculture to support local farmers by promoting and prioritizing the sale of domestically grown fruits and vegetables. The ministry specifically addressed leaders of retail chains, responsible for a significant portion of fresh agricultural produce sales.
Oren Lavi, the CEO of the Ministry of Agriculture, stated, that the ongoing war has severely impacted Israeli farmers, with many facing challenges in maintaining production and supply chains.
However, questions arise about the effectiveness of these appeals in reducing imports, such as tomatoes from Turkey.
Alongside the call to consume Israeli products, the ministry aims to expedite the implementation of a law mandating the country of origin labelling for fresh agricultural produce, set to take effect at the end of December. This law will require sellers to clearly indicate the origin of wholesale agricultural products.
The goal is to empower consumers to easily distinguish locally produced goods and, by choosing them, support Israeli agriculture. Ministry representatives cite surveys indicating that the vast majority of consumers would prefer to buy Israeli products.
