Washington expects a large apple crop this season, resulting in a production increase for both organic and conventional fruit. “The organic apple crop is much larger than last season,” says Chris Ford with Viva Tierra Organic. “It should translate into lots of retail promotions, which is great for the consumer as they find more value.” The organic apple category went through a period of decline in the past 18-24 months due to inflationary factors. Apple prices were high, and consumers started looking for alternatives to put in their basket, whether produce or non-produce. “As an industry, it’s very important we stay focused on growing the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and at Viva Tierra we are committed to this effort. This large crop should offer plenty of opportunities for retailers to entice consumers.”
Too many varieties
“Reports from our field reps indicate that the quality of the Washington organic crop is good,” said Ford. Honeycrisp is a variety that continues to be a favorite on the market. “With so many varieties out in the marketplace, it can be confusing for consumers,” he mentioned. “A lot of the taste experience doesn’t have to be variety specific as it is very subjective.” While Honeycrisp is popular, Ford also has his own personal favorites. “One of the best tasting apples now is a California grown organic Gala. We are confident that our customers will reap the rewards with the quality and flavor of Viva Tierra branded apples. All the fruit comes from the company’s family farmers that strive to harvest the fruit at just the right time for optimum flavor and shelf life throughout the season.
Viva Tierra’s apples make their way across North America. The company has a broad customer base that includes wholesalers, distributors, natural food markets, national retailers, club stores as well as home delivery businesses and processors. “Working with so many different customers gives us an opportunity to sell the whole tree.” Outside North America, Viva Tierra is proud to export Washington state grown organic Fuji apples to Asian markets.
