Corsican clementines have been back on the shelves for about a week. For Les Domaines de la Taste, harvesting began two weeks ago: 300 tons are expected (200 tons organic and 100 tons in conversion) for the early clementines, and in November, the harvest of common clementines should reach 1,200 tons (organic).
The Corsican clementine is “eagerly awaited by consumers”
Products grown in Corsica continue to be very popular. “The Corsican clementine is eagerly awaited by consumers every year, even in times of economic crisis.” The clementine's popularity is due partly to its PGI status, which “provides a guarantee of quality and traceability,” according to Anthony de la Taste. The demand also remains high thanks to French distributors which “have really been promoting the PGI.” This dynamic motivates Anthony, Yoann and Loïc, who are managing the company, to continue working in this direction. “Despite the general rise in costs (packaging, fertilizers...), the product is so popular, especially around Christmas time, which encourages us to work even harder to maintain this level of quality.”
Allowing citrus and avocado production to thrive
Five years ago, Les Domaines de la Taste decided to diversify. Today, clementines are grown alongside oranges (20ha), lemons (10ha) and avocados (30ha). This direction has enabled the company to “create a new offer and work with its clients all year round.” While experimental trials with exotic fruits (lychee, mango and passion fruit) are also being carried out, with rather convincing results, the number 1 objective of the company remains the sustainability of the citrus and avocado ranges. “We have planted a lot, and new orchards are still coming into production, but the priority remains quality,” and the determination to offer products Made in France with a Corsican twist. As “90% of the citrus fruit (lemons and oranges) consumed in France are imported from Spain, and avocados also come from Spain, Peru or Mexico, we want to give a choice to French consumers, who are increasingly sensitive to the origin of the products they buy.”
