Potato market report week 43-44:

'Demand for potatoes could be satisfied without problems'

The potato range was dominated by domestic goods throughout. According to the BLE, there were selective imports from France, Italy and the Netherlands as well, but these all just had a supplementary nature. Availability had not changed significantly, with many varieties still being available. Meanwhile, demand was not particularly pronounced and could be satisfied without difficulty.

Rhineland-Palatinate:
Potato supply from the field has ended with the completion of the harvest. Currently, makeshift storage facilities are being successively cleared. Demand is expected to be somewhat slow this week as consumers stock up ahead of the holiday. Producer prices remain unchanged, for the next few weeks are quite expected inventory markups. Initial accounting evaluations of the last marketing year show very encouraging results for potato production.

NRW:
REKA notes a storage cost surcharge for potatoes that have been stored for longer now, of 4€/100Kg. Furthermore, just a few leftover volumes are to be harvested from the field. According to Weuthen, the marketing of oversized goods is becoming more and more difficult, but inter-territorial shipments are going well. Exports to the Netherlands are sluggish, and exports to Eastern Europe are starting slowly as well.

Lower Saxony:
A large proportion of farmers were able to complete the table potato harvest last week. Similar to North Rhine-Westphalia, a storage premium of €4.00 could be enforced for sweated-through stock, according to BVNON.

Schleswig-Holstein:
The potato market continues to focus on storage of harvested lots. Despite the rainy weather of the last few days, the harvest of table potatoes could continue in many regions. Some farmers were able to complete the harvest. However, the wet weather increases the risk of diseases during storage. Market activity in this area can be described as very slow, as there is little demand due to the holidays.

This means the supply is greater than the demand, and since demand is not expected to pick up in the near future either, lower prices cannot be ruled out. For the time being, however, local prices remain stable. Overall, the quality of the tubers is good, with some regional differences. Due to storage markups of 4 €/dt in Lower Saxony, hopes are growing to be able to counteract the quality markdowns in this region as well.

Hesse:
In the state of Hesse, there have been no price changes compared to the previous week. However, the price level remains significantly higher than in the same week last year.
