BVEO: "India is an important growth market"

Indian market open for German apples

German apples can now be exported to India. This marks the positive outcome of a long and intensive market liberalisation process. For a long time, local apples were not allowed to be exported to India, but apples from other neighbouring European countries were. The Federal Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organisations (BVEO) has therefore negotiated the import conditions for German apples with India together with the relevant federal authorities in recent years.

Following the submission of the official expression of interest and the clarification of all phytosanitary regulations, the trial deliveries of the BVEO members interested in exporting were successfully carried out. Germany has now been included in the list of countries eligible to import apples in an amending ordinance published in the Indian official gazette.

"India is an important growth market that must not remain closed to local apple production," says BVEO Managing Director Dr. Christian Weseloh (right), pleased with the positive outcome of the market opening procedure.

At the same time, Weseloh announces: "We will continue to press ahead with our ongoing endeavours to open up further markets. In addition to India and apples, other regions of the world and speciality crop products are also interesting for export, for example sweet cherries for the Asian region. This means creating new access points and thus opening up further sales opportunities for German companies."
