Between January and August, Spain exported 6.4 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to the EU (a market that accounts for 91% of Spanish sales), i.e. 6% less than in the same period of last year. Sales to non-EU destinations also fell by 14%, to 1.2 million tons.
However, the value of Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports to the 27 Member States grew by 8%, totaling 9,544 million euro, and to non-EU countries by 1%, standing at 2,147 million euro.
Germany and France were the top destinations for Spanish exports from January to August 2023, with 1.9 million tons exported (-2% over the same period in 2022) in the case of Germany and 1.2 million tons (-7%) in the case of France.
The value generated by these exports grew by 13% in the German market, standing at 3,184 million euro, and by 5% in the case of the French market, with 1,779 million euro.
The United Kingdom is the first non-EU destination for Spanish fruits and vegetables. Exports to this market stood at 861,816 tons (-12%) worth 1.4 million euro (-1%).
Exports to the most prominent destination countries outside Europe, such as Brazil or Canada, declined. Sales to Brazil stood at 19,985 tons, experiencing a 9% fall in volume but a 3% increase in value, totaling 26.3 million euro. According to statistics from the Customs and Excise Department of the Tax Agency, processed by FEPEX, 18,297 tons were exported to Canada, 55% less, for a value of 28.9 million euro (-34%).
