Spanish persimmon sales are good at the moment. "This year's harvest went quite well. Prices are good, around €1.40 to €1.60, with few market fluctuations," says Oscar van Turenhout of OV Fruit. According to this Dutch importer, persimmons have increasingly become an established commodity. "But sales rely heavily on ethnic customers. The Dutch will likelier buy apples than persimmons."
Spanish citrus sales are somewhat more complex. "Their quality isn't an issue; their prices, however, are challenging. The Spaniards have all heard South Africa got €20 for a box of oranges. They want that, too, whereas before, they were happy with a tenner, so to speak," Oscar explains. "Some old citrus orchards have, though, been cleared out, making way for fruits like persimmons. Also, it's not really cold enough for citrus to sell well. It should actually be freezing. You'd do well to not have a pallet too many standing around."
Spanish greenhouse vegetables are not selling well yet, either. "Spain started in September, but there's still (cheap) Dutch product on the market. Every week, we say next week should be better, but for now, the market's weak, and dump prices dominate most of it," Oscar concludes.
