On November 3, 2023, officials from the Rosselkhoznadzor Office for the Orenburg Region found a quarantine pest, known as the South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta (Meyrick)), in a batch of fresh tomatoes weighing 6,608 tons from Uzbekistan. This discovery occurred during the phytosanitary control process at the temporary storage warehouse of Service Product LLC.
To confirm the presence of this quarantine pest, a laboratory examination was conducted by specialists from the Orenburg branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution, "Center for Grain Quality Assessment."
As per the requirements of quarantine regulations, the import of these products was prohibited, and the responsible individual was subject to administrative penalties under Article 10.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation.
Since the beginning of 2023, officials from the regional administration have detected the South American tomato moth in 14 instances within imported regulated products, totaling more than 163 tons. These products originated from Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan.
