According to the iQonsulting yearbook, the volume of avocados shipped from Chile in the 2022/2023 season decreased by 30% over the previous season to 88,332 tons. This decrease was mainly due to the spring frosts in September 2022, but it did not prevent the country from being among the world's largest avocado exporters.
In 2022, Mexico was the largest global supplier of avocados with a 44% share of world exports. That year, the country shipped one million tons of avocados, i.e. 15% less than in 2021. 85% of its shipments were destined for the US, and the average FOB price it obtained for its avocado was US$3.4, i.e. 38% higher than in the previous year.
Peru was the world's second-biggest exporter with 583,215 tons and a 25% share of the total. However, it obtained the lowest prices among the main suppliers with US$1.5 FOB per kilo (-17%).
Chile was the world's third largest exporter in 2022 with 109,287 tons and a 5% share. The average price for its product stood at US$1.99 per kilo.
The manager of iQonsulting, Isabel Quiroz, said that "the avocado is different according to the place of origin. The Mediterranean avocado produces more oil and, thus, can be conserved for a longer time; something that consumers have already discovered. This differentiation will undoubtedly favor the avocado from Chile, America, Spain, and Morocco, as well as the avocado grown in valleys where the night cold allows the avocado oil to accumulate and work its magic in its pulp to the delight of consumers around the world."
