San Rafael police evacuated people from a building along Smith Ranch Road last week to investigate a suspicious package that turned out to be 20 pounds of rotting fruit, according to The Mercury News. The package was delivered at 10 am. A foul odor resembling methane or rotten eggs raised suspicions of dangerous contents, police said. The building was evacuated, and the city summoned the University of California, Berkeley, police bomb squad to investigate the package, which ultimately identified the rotting fruit as the source. After a few hours, the building's residents were allowed to return.
