This week, Kazakhstan's Justice Minister announced the official registration of the Almaty Aport as a national brand with a geographical indication. A geographical indication serves as a label, ensuring a product is exclusively produced in a specific region.
In the case of the Almaty Aport, it must be cultivated in Almaty and the surrounding area, meeting taste and quality criteria. This registration, a three-year effort involving the Almaty Apple Association, aims to combat counterfeiting and boost the apple's global recognition.
Notably, the Almaty Aport faces a decline due to stringent growth conditions, making it less appealing to orchard owners. Geographical indication registration is expected to enhance its market appeal. Only certified growers can now use the "Almaty Aport" name. The initiative also seeks international recognition, with efforts underway to register the indication globally.
Stakeholders hope that the Almaty apple's designation will protect it from imitation and ensure its preservation and commercial viability despite challenges.
