"Apple and pear sales have been good since off-tree sales," says Emanuel Sluis of the Dutch trading platform Service2Fruit. "That's true for all varieties, but Beurre Alexander Lucassen pears' price development is most spectacular. These were sold, off-tree, for €0.45, and now, their bin price is around €0.70."
"It's the same with Conference pears. Fruit you don't want hanging on the trees fetch those prices," Emanuel continues.
"I think prices will hobble on at this €0.80-€0.90 level until January. That's historically high. There's fairly broad pear demand."
"That's both from the Benelux and towards the East. For the Lucassens, though, demand is also already coming from a bit further away," explains Emanuel.
"There's a positive sentiment on the apple market, too, though there are slightly more rejects than last year. The local Elstar market is good."
"And Jonagold is fetching quite good prices compared to other years. Things are generally looking far more positive. Even Wellant apples, which were almost given away at the end of last year's season last year, are now making reasonably good money," Emanuel concludes.
