The lemon campaign in Spain has so far been affected by a lack of demand from the European markets that is causing prices to drop constantly. In week 45, average prices at origin ranged between 0.32 and 0.37 Euro per kilo.
"As November progresses, some producers have become justifiably nervous," said the Interprofessional Association for Lemon and Grapefruit, Ailimpo. "We are seeing few operations and no joy from the buying side, as exported volumes remain limited, basically because the market is not really active."
According to the association, the supply of Turkish lemons in the European markets is irregular due to the detection of batches with pesticides, so these are "automatically discarded by many supermarket chains." However, they say "the pressure from buyers is regrettably causing the price of Spanish lemons to fall week after week."
