Ad numbers bounced back this week as new flyers replaced those that were extended over Thanksgiving. Retailers focused on holiday celebrations with offers designed to help shoppers maximize their budgets and fill stockings a little fuller. Holiday fruits like pomegranates, offshore cherries, cranberries, pears, persimmons, and grapes sparkled in store aisles. Winter squashes, cabbage, carrots, beets, parsnips, cauliflower, and broccoli were on hand for hearty meals to ward off the chill. Chestnuts were featured in several flyers. Unshelled nut displays were popular for snacking or gift
giving, while shelled nuts were prominently advertised with other baking supplies.
Total ad numbers this week were 276,283, a 17% increase from last week's total of 235,234. The total for the same week last year was 9% lower than for this year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 146,279 (53% of all ads), onions and potatoes 23,847 (9%), vegetables 93,141 (34%), herbs 854, ornamentals 6,838, and hemp 6,178.
The number of ads for organic produce was 38,325, 14% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year.
Significant increases in price for fruit this week included blackberries (5.6-6. oz package) at 27%, white seedless grapes at 18%, avocados at 13%, and pomegranates (ea.) at 12%. Significant decreases for fruit included Bosc pears at 17%, apple juice (64 oz.) at 13%, and Honeycrisp apples at 11%. There were no significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week. Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only grape tomatoes (10 oz.) at 15%.
There were no significant decreases. Poinsettias (6 in.) decreased in price by 19%.
