Retilplast, the company from southern Italy that manufactures, processes and commercializes nets, films, and tarpaulins, has launched Dual-tex, a new two-colored plastic cover with a dual function.
Dual-tex
FreshPlaza has talked about it with Walter Ruggia, technological innovation manager for the company. "The white side has a photosynthetically active function, i.e., it makes the lower part of the plants brighter while at the same time enabling a homogeneous ripening of the fruit as well as a possible increase of yields. When in contact with the soil, the black side mitigates the growth of weeds while letting water and air through. It maintains the subsoil rich in micro-organisms useful for the fertility of the soil."

Retilplast explains that Dual-tex can be used both in orchards (apple, cherry, kiwifruit, pear, stone fruits, and grapes) and for greenhouse vegetables, as well as in the nursery and flower and plant sectors.
"For decades, we have been at work to meet the needs of operators, aware that climate change is already making working the land more complicated. After an experimentation period, we are launching Dual-tex, made of PE-HD. Production is already underway, and we are making the first deliveries to a few citrus production companies. Ever since we started talking about it to our clients, they have been asking us about it as they are curious about its effectiveness."
Dual-tex is walkable, breathable, permeable, and lasting. It was developed to improve fruit growth and bring economic benefits to the company. "It is ideal for both raised and traditional beds. The light reflection increases the influx of the phloem, thus generating advantages also when it comes to nutritional values. The black mulching side helps save on the cutting of weeds which would otherwise grow under the foliage and reduce the need for water."
