Turning banana waste into clothes

In Pakistan, where banana cultivation yields 154,000 tons annually, a collaboration between Interloop and Simply Suzette has introduced the Unpeeled collection. Addressing the environmental impact of burning 10 million tons of banana stems yearly, the collection utilizes Loomshake banana fiber for denim, hosiery, and knitwear. Interloop, surpassing its 70% sustainable materials goal by 2025, employs a blend of 20% Loomshake and 80% cotton, diminishing the environmental footprint of cotton cultivation—a water-intensive process.

Not only a sustainability initiative, Unpeeled is a technological marvel. Interloop and Simply Suzette collaborated across continents, utilizing 3D design and virtual tools for remote communication. This technological synergy underscores the potential for global collaborations facilitated by advanced tools. Additionally, Interloop's Looptrace technology ensures traceability, allowing customers to track materials back to the farm level. Certification through the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification's ISCC Plus scheme guarantees transparency and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

Unpeeled not only marks an innovative use of banana fiber but also serves as an inspirational success story. Interloop's early adoption of banana fiber fabric showcases the industry's potential to embrace new materials. Beyond its environmental benefits, Unpeeled symbolizes a convergence of sustainability, technology, and traceability, setting a precedent for responsible and innovative practices in the fashion industry.
