Gerard Hoekman (Mulder Onions):

"Being too pricey opens the doors for others, as we saw with Chinese onions this year"

Too wild, Dutch onion exports are not, says Gerard Hoekman. "It's a standard pre-Christmas period. Batches are being cleared out, but it's never spectacular. Many companies will probably also stop between Christmas and New Year. After all, it's only three working days," he says.

"The onions are going to many destinations, but Africa is undoubtedly the driving force behind our exports. They should keep asking for onions until late January. That's more than desirable, too, because the European market isn't genuinely moving yet."

"The far-off destinations also have plenty of competition from Chinese onions, which dominate everywhere. And with that country, you're never sure how that will continue. But, it's clear that if you're too pricey, doors open for others. That's the danger with high prices. And that's certainly complicated things for us in several countries," Gerard continues.

"Let's face it, €0.50 for a bale is still decent money. And what makes the situation different is that prices have stayed high. Normally, those rise successively based on supply and demand, but the current pricing is less affected. That doesn't make trading any easier either."

"The packing plants pre-select quality reasonably well, but we must remain cautious. Especially at the far destinations, a container with a few onions affected with fusarium can spoil the entire lot. Vigilance is thus called for," Gerard continues.
