Alexander Lasslop from Eden Fruits at the start of the Algerian date season:

"There is more expansion potential for Naturland dates"

Deglet Nour dates from the new Algerian harvest have been shipped to Europe for several weeks now. "We generally have good volumes available, even if more dates have to be sorted out," says Eden Fruit. The company, which is based in Kehl am Rhein, sources a significant proportion of its produce directly from its plantations in Algeria.

The Algerian date industry is in direct competition with neighboring Tunisia, where the Deglet Nour variety is also grown for export to Europe. "The competition with Tunisia can be felt this year due to their relatively low prices. Accordingly, the price pressure is considerable at the moment," says the Eden Fruits sales team.

The market was almost empty at the start of the new marketing season. Overall, the company can look back on an 'average' date year in 2022/23, the company also reports. At the last BioFach in Nuremberg, the company announced its Naturland certification, which goes beyond the European organic criteria and takes into account social criteria and, above all, the protection of natural resources such as water. "You can see that consumers are also increasingly convinced of the relevance of this issue."

In combination with the growing awareness of the current environmental and climate crisis, this should contribute to the growing acceptance of Naturland products in general and therefore also for dates in the future. "In our opinion, the main task in the coming years will be to better communicate the added value of the Naturland seal to the end consumer. In this respect, we still see a lot of potential for expansion in the future," the company concludes.
