Salad Bar of young shoots grown in a single cycle

For the 2023 season, Voltz Maraîchage has developed the Salad Bar concept, offering recipes for a mix of young shoots. Very trendy at the moment, the sale of young shoots is a must in the 4th range supermarket aisles and on market stalls. The seeds presented are marketed individually, as required by law (species are not allowed to be mixed in seed bags), which also allows for greater flexibility for growers who can choose to favor one variety or another according to pre-established recipes. This project took almost two years to develop.

The challenge is to produce a mix in a single cycle
Voltz Maraîchage developed this concept primarily to “make life easier” for producers who want to diversify and stand out. “The most common challenge faced by producers is indeed to produce a mixture in one single cycle,” explains Cédric Thommy, technical sales representative and project manager at Voltz Maraîchage. Recipes are designed to ensure that production cycles are equivalent. For example, sowing a recipe on date X will enable the whole production to be harvested on date Y.” The recommended recipes indicate the varieties to be selected and the proportions in which they should be used to obtain a good mix. Technical advice is provided to guide growers with sowing and cultivation.

But the seed company did not want to focus only on the cycle. “When composing the mixes, we looked for different species that would provide taste, color, texture and mass, so that everyone could find something to their liking within the mix.”

Young shoot mixes: a growing market
Given the popularity of mixed young shoots, Voltz Maraîchage is not ruling out further developing its Salad Bar range with other recipes. After all, “it is a market that is definitely growing,” with consumers increasingly keen on fresh, ready-to-use products and original, varied compositions.
