Danny Mucci with Mucci Farms:

“This tomato variety is resonating at retail”

"When introducing a new variety to the market, you're always hopeful that consumers will love it as much as you do," says Danny Mucci, Managing Partner with Mucci Farms. With about three out of five shoppers purchasing tomatoes, it is a popular item at retail. At the same time, many new tomato products are continuously being brought to market, and how does a new product differentiate from what's already available on the shelf?

Mucci Farms introduced Savorries sweet strawberry tomatoes earlier this year and is happy the product has performed well. "The feedback has been great, and we believe that's because at the core of the product is its remarkable flavor," commented Mucci. "Shoppers generally shop with their eyes, and the product is very visually appealing with its strawberry-like shape and bright red color, so this helps get us the first purchase." It is offered on the vine, which gives it a farm-fresh smell. "In addition, our marketing team chose a color scheme, typography, and recipe on the packaging that really stands out, which we believe plays a role in attracting consumers in produce departments." They are available in 12 oz. and 1.65 lb. Top Seal format. "The combination of flavor, shape, and branding separates Savorries from other similar items, justifying space on the shelf."

It's the first holiday season for Savorries in the marketplace, and expectations are for the tomato variety to become an annual staple for get-togethers. They can be used in many different ways, highlighting the season. "The bright red color and green vines certainly fit the theme of the season and offer a great presentation for get-togethers. In addition, their impressive flavor profile and texture offer lots of versatility, ranging from snacking to salad toppers and sauces."
