Andrea Pignato (Fellini): "The shortage of vegetables is dramatic"

Here are some holiday packaging ideas

Every year, Fellini Patrizio comes up with new ideas for Christmas packages. Once again, in 2023, it has not disappointed the expectations. Red and auspicious inscriptions take the lead. All items are wrapped in the distinctive design that will mark the entire Christmas season through Epiphany.

Holiday packaging is important," explains sales manager Andrea Pignato, "and our customers value it. However, this year's period is certainly characterized by a dramatic shortage of almost all references, as already forecast by Emile Fellini."

According to Pignato, an average of 30 to 90 percent of the quantities of vegetables are in short supply, depending on the source. "Only fennel is slowly returning to normal, after a month of heavy shortages. But otherwise, there are major problems. From the brassicas to the leafy greens, the situation is very difficult."

The result is a disruption of schedules as customers are desperately in need of vegetables. "The prices are very high, but since we are all in the same situation, no one seems to be making a big deal out of it. A sign that the shortage is widespread is that we have had strong requests from abroad."

But what does this situation depend on? "It is a series of causes, a series of adverse circumstances that have all converged at the same time. From the summer drought, to the high temperatures of September and October, to the breakdown of those temperatures some weeks ago, to excessive rainfall in some productive areas. In short, there's been a standstill of crops almost everywhere, and the result has been a lack of finished product.

A hundred thousand Romanesco cabbage plants should have been ready for harvest last week, according to a supplier in Fellini. Out of 100,000, they have scoured dozens of acres and harvested 280. "The delay is significant, right in the run-up to Christmas, when demand is normally on the rise.”
