Challenges and innovations in Armenian fruit and vegetable exports

Armenian fruit and vegetable exports primarily target the Russian market, constituting 95% of the total export volume. However, periodic bans by the Russian agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, highlight quality and certification issues. According to the FAO report, Armenian exporters are slow to adapt to quality standards. In 2021, the export value of Armenian fruits and vegetables reached $126 million.

A key challenge in Armenian agriculture is the absence of large enterprises and fragmented arable land, leading to inefficient resource use. Lack of farmer awareness, outdated technology, and environmental problems also impact product quality.

To address agricultural issues and enhance product quality, the Armenian government is increasing investments in the agricultural sector. However, inefficiencies in current legislation and insufficient support for resource-limited farmers are noted concerns.

Armenia is incorporating smart technologies into agriculture to combat pests and improve product quality. Despite the potential in the fruit and vegetable sector, challenges in storage, logistics, and limited product shelf life call for a more centralized approach and innovations to ensure a steady export of fresh Armenian produce.
