"Orders from some of our clients have increased by as much as 60% - A positive trend that stared around one month ago and that will continue throughout the Christmas period at least. Those who used to request 4-5 pallets up until a few days ago are now planning 12 and are booking 18 for the festive period," reports Francesca Gallicchio, administrator at Gallicchio Frutta, a company from Basilicata (Italy) that focuses on persimmons.
Divino persimmons
The manager believes she can prolong the current season by around two months. "Unless destocking is very quick, we are expecting to ship the last quantities in early February not only thanks to the larger volumes and more producers, but most of all thanks to specific agronomic techniques that are enabling us to delay ripening. There are various batches that have not been harvested yet and we have teams at work every day to perform harvesting operators." The consumption of persimmons is growing everywhere, also because they are considered tasty fruits that are practical to eat. "This is the first years we have launched "Divino – il kaki italiano" and we are very pleased with it. We did not expect the campaign to be so lively. Sales are going great, as it is easy to sell good produce. The markets demanding the most quantities are Turin, Verona, Rimini and Florence in addition to Puglia and Calabria. The only negative note is the significant spreading of some phytosanitary problems such as fungi (e.g. Alternaria) and insect-related issues (e.g. fruit fly and whitefly) leading to increased waste."
