Belarus, one of the largest potato producers, introduced over 100 potato varieties cultivated in the Republican Genetic Bank. According to forecasts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, an increase in potato exports is anticipated, particularly to Russia.
The potato harvest in 2023 reached 828,000 tons, including 47,600 tons allocated for stabilization funds and 300,000 tons for export. Upgraded storage facilities ensure the preservation of the harvest, while modern sorting technologies enhance the produce's competitiveness.
Belarusian breeders are developing new varieties, such as the "Yulia" variety, ideal for washing and vacuum packing. The breeding efforts aim to improve yield and resistance to diseases.
Considering the evolving market demands, experts observe a growing interest in potatoes with coloured flesh. Consumer preferences also shift towards smooth, washed tubers, and potatoes without skins.
